I do this everytime I have a spelling test, which in my advanced placement literature class is every single friday. :P There are so many people who don't ace these tests, because they don't do these simple little things.

You Will Need (3 things)
- Paper
- Pencil
- Paper
Steps (5 steps, 5 minutes)

One thing you could do would be to break up a word into parts that sound like other words and then distort them to make them into a sentence.
For example: I used to have trouble remembering how to spell the word separate. I always spelled it seperate, which is NOT correct. -

Broken up into smaller parts:
se-par-ate
If you add another e to se, it becomes see. Par can easily change into pair, because you can see a pair of something, and ate sounds like 8.
See pair eight.
Make it into a sentence:
I see pairs of eight.
See pair eight
See-pair-eight
Se-par-ate. -

Another thing you could do is to memorize the word by mentally spelling it phonetically.
For example: cacophony.
Out loud it's pronounced cuh-cough-oh-nee.
To remember the spelling, in my head I always said it as: cake-oh-phony. -

A third tip I have for memorizing things is to make an allusion, and then make a story to go along with it.
For example: caesura.
Caeser had a wife. Her name was Caesura. (Not really, but you get what I'm saying). -

Now go out and ace a spelling test.
