great cast on for starting any shawl that uses a garter stitch border. it makes a seamless start to the border. i first used this border on the coleus shawl by kirsten kapur. i have since used it in many of my own shawls including my newest shawl, dark horse and an older one named hojas (that's a free shawl pattern attached to this post).

cast on 3 sts in what every way you wish (but keep them loose)
knit 6 rows. you will then have 3 garter stitch ridges. you are going to pick up a stitch along the edge of each of these rows.
you can pick up and knit the edge stitches one at a time or place them all on the left hand needle first and then knit them. i do it one at a time.
you now have 6 stitches on the needle and are ready to pick up the edge stitches. again you can do this one at a time or put all 3 on at once and then knit them.
you now have 9 sts on the needle and are ready to begin knitting the meat of your shawl. see how nicely the garter ridges are laying (all the same direction).
use this cast on for my hojas shawl pattern.
