Simple Face Proportions
Posted by Marion D.
About
Learn to draw a very simple line drawing of a face. Where are the eyes in relation to the ears?; how much space is there between the eyes?; where do you start the nose? and more. A basic lesson for those first learning to draw face proportions.

You Will Need (3 things)
- Eraser
- Paper
- Pencil
Steps (7 steps, 10 minutes)
-
1
On your paper, draw 4 lines equally spaced with your pencil.
-
2
Now draw a line down the centre of those lines.
-
3
Draw an oval shape circle in the centre of the line like this.
-
4
Draw your eyebrows on the second horizontal line. Now think of the bottom 3 lines as A, B and C.
-
5
Draw the eyes, just below line A. They are oval shaped. Note that they are almost in the centre of the head. (A common mistake is to draw the eyes much higher up).
Now draw the ears. They start at the same level as the eyes and end on line B.
Draw the bottom of the nose on line B.
Draw the vertical groove between the nose and the top lip.
It's called the Philtrum! and also draw the top lip. -
6
Did you notice the space between the eyes is roughly the same size as an eye?. From the corner of each eye, follow the line down and draw the curves of the nostrils.
-
7
Now draw the eyelids, just follow the oval shape line of the eye. Add the pupil of the eye. Complete the mouth. To draw your neck, start from behind the ear.
You can add hair now too.
You have completed a very basic face with proportions in the right place. Obviously all faces are different and vary, but this is a good starting point for those first learning to draw a basic face. The best lesson to follow this is to copy your own face in front of a mirror .
