Made out of thin hemp twine. I learned how to do this using a video from expertvillage. (just look up "Alternating Knot Hemp"), and it took me from start to finish. :3
Made out of thin hemp twine. I learned how to do this using a video from expertvillage. (just look up "Alternating Knot Hemp"), and it took me from start to finish. :3

Start off with two long strings. By long, I mean very long since we are making a necklace. Then, you put the ends of the strings together, making a large loop. You will now tie the strings together, so they look just like the picture.

Put one of the outside strings off to the side, as seen. Just forget this string is even there. This leaves you with three strings on one side. You then start to make your standard square knot. If you are having a hard time understanding my instructions, look up "square knot" on Google. Starting with the string on the outside, go under the middle string (the string in the center of your three strings), and over the farthest left string in your three strings.

Then, you take the farthest left string in your trio, and take it under the string you have just put over it, over the middle string, and into the right string's loop that was made when we were weaving with it in the last step.

You then pull the outside strings down as far as you can get them (they should be all the way up to the starting knot that is holding all 4 strings together). Make sure that the middle string is also pulled, so it doesn't bunch up when you are tightening. Now, you move the far right string out from what we have just worked with, keeping the far left string and middle string. You then add the far left and middle strings to the string we didn't use in the last step, and just repeat step 2-3. Our far left string from the last step has now turned into the middle string.

Just keep repeating steps 2-4, and you should get something that looks like this. Make sure that there is always a loop on the side. you can make sure of this by always pulling the middle string of your trio straight down firmly.

To Add a Bead To add a bead, you take the middle two of the four, as seen in the picture, and put them in the bead. You then just start off where you were, so if you had to do the left side, you would then just start doing the left side. Doing this should make a little circle or oval around the bead.

When you feel as if you are done, simply tie a knot at the end, and add a stopper (just a bead that is big or small enough to fit in the loop that is at the beginning).

Yaaaay now you are done! :D Hopefully all of these steps have helped! Remember, if they make no sense to you, just go to expertvillage and look up "alternating knot hemp"! The hemp that i use is thin. I bought it at Walmart, and my beads i bought at Michaels. If you do not have a Michaels, just go to Hobby Lobby or Walmart to get everything you need. I DO NOT RECOMEND GOING IN WATER WHEN YOU ARE WEARING AN ITEM WITH THIS KNOT! I have found it gets very messy looking, so just always take it off before swimming or showering! :)
