Once a sad old blouse, now a cute skirt for a little girl.
Once a sad old blouse, now a cute skirt for a little girl.
Locate donor fabric, in this case, a summer blouse with pretty cotton fabric. This should be wide enough to accomodate a child's waist plus enough for generous gathering. Check for holes, tears or stains so they can be dealt with.
Disect the blouse. Allow enough fabric for the desired length and a little extra if you are going to use a self waistband. You can use the existing hem. Be sure to save any buttons or extra fabric for later use.
Choose some good scraps to work with.
You can diguise stains or tears with a well placed pocket or applique.
The fabric for this was rather sheer and I wanted this for fall/winter. I lined the skirt with the lower portion of a tee shirt. This will keep little legs warmer. Watch for bulk, too bulky gets harder to work with.
To do this simply insert the tee shirt under the skirt and baste into place at the waist line. Tee shirts are stretchy, so gently stretch to fit. You could even add a ruffle to the bottom for a petticoat look.
I added a waist band, although you could use a self waistband using the exiting skirt fabric. For regular elastic make a casing and insert the elastic to fit and then sew shut.I used Sport Elastic which is awesome for children's clothes. Just follow the manufacturer's instructions - or contact me if you need some help.
The End.
