I saw something like these at a craft fair recently and was instantly drawn to their cuteness. Along with t he fibre filling they were stuffed with some substance which made them smell nice. But as usual I also decided they where to simple to spend £6.50 on, and that I could make funkier ones myself for free! The hearts I saw where 'advertised' as nice 'things' to hang in babies cots ... or whatever. I think they look cool on door and window handles. I know what my friends shall be receiving for Christmas presents. And I'm gunna make a xmas tree shaped one for our tree!. x

Make a template using the fold in the centre of a piece of newspaper. This will make your shape symmetrical. Tip: You don't have to make a heart either - stars, circles, ovals, trees, people, houses, birds - God - go wild (depending on the occasion).
Pin the template onto the fabric keeping away from selvedge’s. Tip: If you’re using the same fabric for both sides of the heart (or whatever) fold the fabric in half (nice sides together) and lay the template on top. This makes both bits of fabric identical once they are cut out.
Cut out the pieces.
The ribbon - this is the important part. Cut it the right length adding 2/3 cm’s extra. Lay the ribbon on the nice side of a piece of fabric. Put the extra length of ribbon over this edge of the fabric - this will anchor it inside. Also try and get the ribbon as straight as you can. Tip: For a heart shape, make sure the ribbon is in the centre on the 'v' otherwise when you turn it inside out it won’t hang right.
Pin the ribbon in place. Tip: Pin it from the wrong side. So when it's sewn you can easily take the pins out. (See the pictures for a simpler explanation)
Pin the pieces of fabric together nice sides together.
Sew the two pieces. (Another) Tip: Start sewing 2/3 of the way down on a straight side. And finish 1/3 down on the same side. Or there abouts. This should leave a big enough gap so you can turn it inside out.
Make small cuts almost to the seams every 0.5 - 1 cm or so. Especially around corners. This makes the shape smooth and the fabric not gather inside. Take the pins out of the back of the fabric, and turn everything inside out! Pulling the ribbon can help.
Stuff away!
Hand sew the gap.
To decorate: Fold some ribbon and sew it to make it secure. This may take some fiddling.
Pick a nice ol' button and sew it on the front of the ribbon. I added some beads.
Find a good place for it on the heart, and then sew the ribbon on using the holes in the button. Tip: If you poked your fingers to many times for comfort with the needles -use super glue.
Whhhala! Congratulations. Sit back and admire your handmade heart! x
