Someone in my house always forces me to clear out my wardrobe. So as protest I decide to save everything in a bag because I'll need it...one day. But inspiration struck and I had to make something out of items I once really loved! I found it tricky because of having to find seams and then undo them very carefully. Also I don't have a sewing machine, so takes a while to sew up! And I have no patience. I'm always impressed by recycled projects and clothing recons so this was my first attempt. It didn't turn out well :( it just won't be able to hold all my stuff. But here it is anyway because it's a learning curve thing. It's going to be used as a storage bag. It could even go into a wardrobe over the bar because the sleaves are joined in the middle by buttons so could be undone and buttoned up again.

Instructions

  1. Small 100 1139 1236207761

Find the seam of the sleaves and undo it. Because this is a knitted item there was no risk of fraying, the sleaves are finished peices of knitting. Although this might not be the case with whatever you have. These will be the strap of the bag.

  2. Small 100 1140 1236207776

Cut off a section appropriate for the body of the bag. Undo as much as possible from the rest of the cardigan to use as thread.

  3. Small 100 1141 1236207826

You will be left with an unfinished edge which may fray and come undone. So seam up both edges from inside out and then sew round the unfinished edge. The opening of the bag is already made from where the caridgan buttoned up.

  4. Small 100 1146 1236207838

Add some embellishments if you want too. The plan was to use this heart patch but since the end result wasn't what I wanted I'm going to save it for something else.

  5. Small 100 1142 1236207897

The next part of the plan was to use this tshirt as a lining that would have been sewn into the seam and at the opening of the bag.

  6. Sew the sleaves onto the bag...and done!
