You Will Need (5 things)

  • Tapestry Needle for sewing squares together
  • Crocheted Granny Square s in sizes as detailed in the diagram
  • 1 Crochet Hook in size you used to make the squares
  • Yarn in assorted colors used in squares (for sewig squares together)
  • Yarn in a color that will look good as the edging

Steps (5 steps, 1 minutes)

  1. 1

Root around the house & find the bag with the Babette squares that you've given up on. Make new squares as needed to come up with the totals listed below. Or, if you can't find the bag, or never started in the first place, choose a Granny Square Pattern and make the number of squares listed below:

    12 round squares: 1
    8 round squares: 2
    6 round squares: 9
    4 round squares: 14
    2 round squares: 17

  2. 2

Block your squares!!!! this is the step I always avoid. But it's important here or assembling your scarf will be a nightmare. And we've all seen pictures of Babette blankets that look all wonky. (And, if you like that look, go ahead and skip the blocking - but get ready for some tricky assembling.)
I recommend using a padded Quilters board printed with lines. That makes it really easy to block your squares into incremental sizes. My smallest square was 2" when blocked, so I made sure each 2 round block was 2", each 4 round block was 4" etc. Some had to be really stretched, some not so much. i used a lot of pins & steam from the iron to coax each square into shape.

  3. 3

Using the diagram in the attached pdf file sew your squares invisibly using yarn colors that blend in with the squares you're sewing.

  4. 4

Using a color you like, edge the scarf:
Row 1: Single crochet all around.
Row 2: *ch5, sk3, ch5. Repeat from * around. (You can either be really organized and count to be sure you have a multiple of 13 stitches, or you can go the lazy way that I prefer and wait until you're about 1/2 or 3/4 of the way up the last side & count the remaining stitches. Then you just skip stitches as needed so that you end up meeting perfectly at the beginning.

  5. 5

Model the scarf while patting yourself on the back for clearing out one more UFO from your house.
