I "reember" doing this in elementary school using those fun wax filled pans. I chose to work with yarn thought I recall my teacher using kite string. This was for making snowflake tree decorations. I wish I still had my original it was very intricate. I also remember following a dot-to-dot how to in school.

On parchment paper or foil create any shape that's possible to make using one piece of string (continuous line)- it makes it easier. Using push pins and a Styrofoam block note your key points. Make a basic loop for hanging purposes on your string and then tie it off on the first point.
Using most any type of glue soak your string as you wrap it around the pins.
Then tie your string off. It's easier if you can end up on the pin you started.
FUN = Then douse in glitter! Let dry. Feel free to trim any loose fibers.
