Create a distressed paint effect on old furniture by layering paint and rubbing it back. Here I have used gold as the undercoat so that the distressed areas really glint through the chalky blue paint. See this project and more images on my blog Cassiefairy.com

Instructions

  1. Small 113763 2f2016 03 22 113302 distressed%2bfurniture%2bdiy%2bproject

Lightly sand the surface of the chair and wipe clean. Allow to dry fully before starting to paint.

  2. Small 113763 2f2016 03 22 113957 furniture makeover project paint retro conservatory chair

Cover the chair in the undercoat paint - here I've chosen to use gold paint.

  3. Small 113763 2f2016 03 22 114036 gold%2bchair%2bdistressed%2bpaint%2bproject

Thrifty tip - You can just paint the areas that you intend to expose - such as fronts of the legs, top of the chair, back support etc. Alternatively, cover the whole chair with the undercoat paint so that you can decide which parts to rub back later.

Once the undercoat paint has completely dried, cover the entire piece of furniture with the top coat of paint. Allow to dry.

  5. Small 113763 2f2016 03 22 114320 furniture makeover project paint conservatory chair

Thrifty Tip - Use an old kitchen scouring pad to rub away the top layer of paint and expose the colour beneath. This will save you having to buy wire wool for the job!

I recommend rubbing down the chair outdoors to stop the top layer of paint covering your home with a fine coat of paint powder!
