A little revamping of a summery cotton scarf makes it a perfect autumnal accessory!

You Will Need (6 things)

  • Rit Dye
  • Rubber Bands
  • Prewashed Cotton Scarf
  • Bleach Pen
  • Rubber Gloves
  • Plastic Table Covering Covering

Steps (4 steps, 120 minutes)

  1. 1

Here's what I started out with, a light cotton, square scarf with a metallic stripe.

  2. 2

Deciding on a banded dye pattern, I laid out a grid of large and small concentric circles. Using rubber bands I got the whole scarf all set for dyeing.

Then I dyed it with 1/2 bottle RIT Black dye mixed in 1 gallon of very hot 140º water for about 15 minutes. If the tap water's not hot enough just heat some in the microwave or tea kettle.

After removing from dye, rinse in cool water til it runs clear, wash with mild detergent and hang dry.

  3. 3

Well, here's where I find out that cheap rubber bands are cheap for a reason. About half the bands popped during the dye process. This kinda messed up the pattern I had so meticulously set up. OY!!

Not one to take a craft-fail lying down, I whipped out my trusty bleach pen and add some extra details in the black spaces.
