So i got a French Knitting Doll for Christmas off my mum and kept knitting loads of long strands and had no idea what to do with them so i came up with this nifty idea :). and the great thing is it really doesn't use up a lot of wool :) If anyone doesn't know how to french knit with you knitting doll let me know and ill do a quick video tutorial on how to do it for you :). I hope you all Enjoy making your scarfs. :)

Instructions

  1. Small img 2925

First thing you need 3 Balls of wool. i used Double knit but you can use whatever you want or have. most importantly you need a french knitting doll. [if you dont have one there cheap to buy or you can even make them yourself :)] Scissors and lastly - i used a crochet hook but you can use a darning needle, a wooden cuticle stick or even a pen. whatever you have lying around to knit.

  2. Small img 2896

Take one of your balls of wool and french knit it until its long enough to wrap around your neck once and have plenty hanging at either side. DONT FORGET TO TAKE INTO ACCOUNT THE KNITTING THAT CONTINUES INSIDE THE KNITTING DOLL.

  3. Small img 2901

Take your next ball of wool and do another one. IMPORTANT : make sure that it is the same length as the one before. ALSO - dont forget to account for the wool inside the knitting doll.

  4. Small img 2902

Take your third ball of wool and do the exact same as above.

  5. Small img 2904

you should now have three long strands of french knitting. lay them out on a flat surface side by side in whatever order you would like to have them in. i went from dark grey to mid grey to white.

  6. Small img 2906

Gather all three tails of wool on one end together and tie in a knot. make sure its nice and tight to the ends of your french knitting tubes.

  7. Small img 2908

this next step is optional but i found it the easiest way to do it. Take the tied end and loosely tie it in a bow around a door or wardrobe handle. this helps you when you come to the next step.

  8. Small img 2909

Now start pleating the three strands of wool together until you run out of knitted wool. Do not pleat the tails at the end as you will be cutting this off.

  9. Small img 2911

Take the Open end and gather the three already pleated strands together and tie in a tight knot.

  10. Small img 2921

now take both ends of your pleated scarf and tie them together in a knot [i knotted mine a few times for extra support.] you should now have a huge circle. [this stage is optional you can just trim the strands off either side and leave your scarf open]

  11. Small img 2922

Last step. take all the little strands you have left [there should be six] and cut them off right down at the knot you have just made from tying them together.

And vwala your scarf is complete. you can now wear it whatever way you like. you can also maybe add a french knitted flower onto it if you like. or leave it as is. [i will do a flower tutorial soon if anyones wanting to add onto there scarf] Enjoy.
