Makes you quietly shout 'yay!'

This Scarflette is based on Fluttershy, from 'My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic'. It started out as a way to practise some techniques and create a short scarflette to wear around my freezing cold house, and the colour choice tipped me into fan tribute mode. If you're a MLP:FIM fan you can use the same idea to pay homage to any pony, just swap the yellow and pink for the flank and mane colour of choice, and adjust the cutie mark accordingly. If you're not a fan, then it's still a cute scarf, and I also demand you look the show up on YouTube and join the herd!

Description

This Scarflette is based on Fluttershy, from 'My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic'. It started out as a way to practise some techniques and create a short scarflette to wear around my freezing cold house, and the colour choice tipped me into fan tribute mode. If you're a MLP:FIM fan you can use the same idea to pay homage to any pony, just swap the yellow and pink for the flank and mane colour of choice, and adjust the cutie mark accordingly. If you're not a fan, then it's still a cute scarf, and I also demand you look the show up on YouTube and join the herd!

Instructions

  1. Small char fluttershy

Start with the 5mm (H) crochet hook and yellow yarn: 1) Ch 17 2) Dc along the row, starting in second chain from the hook (16) 3) Ch 3 and turn your work (you will not crochet into these, but they must be done at the end of each row to get the stitches up high enough, and it creates that scalloped edge you see in the photo). 4) Repeat steps 2 and 3 for 30 more rows of 16 Dc. (31 rows total). (No photo for this, so enjoy a picture of Fluttershy!)

  2. Small 17022012650 1

Colour change to pink yarn: (To colour change, follow this tutorial:http://crochet.about.com/library/bldccolor.htm) 5) Repeat steps 2 and 3 for 26 rows of 16 Dc. (57 rows total). 6) Dc 7, ch2 (skip 2), Dc 7 (16) (Ch3 turn work) 7) Dc 16 (16) (Ch3 turn work) 8) Repeat step 7 for 3 more rows of 16 Dc (62 rows total) 6) Finish off and weave in tails from beginning/ colour change/ ending. Your scarflette is now complete. The skipped stitches should have created a button hole.

  3. Small 16022012636

To add fringe, you take three strands of pink yarn, loop it in half and pull the loop through a hole between two Dc. Take the tails of the yarn over the stitch and through the loop, and pull tight to secure (it's sort of like a slip knot). See the photo for clarity or there is an excellent video here:http://video.about.com/crochet/Simple-Crochet-Fringe.htm. My fringe is quite short and only in every other hole, but make yours as long as you like and a fuller effect can be achieved using every hole.

  4. Small 16022012637

Put your scarflette to one side and we'll make the butterflies. Take your 3.5mm (E) crochet hook and create a flat circle using pink yarn by: 1) Ch 2/ magic ring (however you prefer to start) 2) Sc 6 into the centre of second ch from the hook (6) 3) Sl St to join 4) Ch 1 5) Inc around (12) 6) Sl St to join and finish, leaving a long tail for sewing. MAKE 12 CIRCLES (4 per butterfly).

  5. Small 16022012637

For the body, using 3.5mm (E) hook and blue yarn: 1) Ch 7 (leave a long tail from your slip knot for sewing) 2) Sc along the row from second ch from hook (6) 3) Ch 1 4) Sc down the other side of the chain (creates a flat oval) (6) 5) Finish off, leaving a long tail for sewing. MAKE 3 BODIES (1 per butterfly)

  6. Small 16022012638

Take four of your circles. Using the tails, sew two together side by side, and repeat for the remaining two.

  7. Small 16022012640

Overlap the joined circles slightly to give the impression of wings overlapping, and sew in place.

  8. Small 16022012641

Sew a body over the centre join, bringing the long tails into the centre at the back. Tie together for strength, and leave (these will be used to sew the butterfly in place).

  9. Small 16022012642

    Make three butterflies this way.

  10. Small 16022012643

Sew the butterflies onto the end of the yellow section as shown. Make sure they're all the same way up, or it'll look odd! (I had to redo mine after this photo because I noticed one was upside down).

  11. Small 17022012644

Either grab yourself a button, or you can crochet one as I did in any colour (I chose blue for a change!) as follows: Using a 3.5mm (E) hook 1) Ch 2/ magic ring (however you prefer to start) 2) Sc 6 into the centre of second ch from the hook (6) 3) Sl St to join 4) Ch 1 5) Inc around (12) 6) Ch 1 7) {Sc, Inc} Repeat around (18) 8) Sl St to join and finish, leaving a long tail for sewing. Sew this into position on the back of the yellow section (I sewed in directly behind a butterfly).

  12. Small 17022012645

And you're done! Wear your scarflette with pride :)
