I've seen these in many craft shows and galleries and wanted to try them myself. They are super easy and fun to make. I love taking the small ones everywhere I go!

Find a nice and smooth rock of any size.
Using many thin layers, wrap wool tightly around rock.
Using very hot water, get the rock with wool completely wet.
Add some dish soap and roll rock between both hands as if you were shaping clay. Make sure to agitate the wool (this creates the felt) by scrubbing harshly. I usually wait till the wool is firm and felted, and this usually takes 5-10 minutes of scrubbing.
This step can be skipped. If you want some extra coloring, get a very very thin piece of another color and tightly wrap against rock. Repeat steps 3+4 allowing the wool to be unevenly spread, making patterns of its own.
Rinse with very cold water (the change in heat allows the fibers to contract and helps with the felting process.) Then, let dry.
