This sturdy staple is so brightly colored and downy, it’s one of the prettiest blooms in the garden. The fluffy felt version is almost as cheerful as the real thing!
Cut every 1 inch (2.5 cm) along the length of the felt strip to get 18 small rectangles of felt. Trace the marigold petal template onto each petal and carefully cut them out just inside the traced line.
Thread your needle with an 18-inch (45.7 cm) length of thread. To begin stitching the petals to the circle base, fold the edges into the center of the first petal, then stitch it to the outer rim of the circle. This will take a few tries to master because the petals are so small, but once you get the hang of it, it will go pretty quickly. Stitch each petal around the diameter of the circle, taking care to bunch them closely together and not leave any spaces.
Continue layering petals inside the outer layer. As you fill in the center of the circle base, the bottom edges of the innermost petals will pucker slightly, forming the center of the flower.
Fold the piece of floral wire in half and thread the ends of the wire through the buttonholes. Twist the ends of the wires together loosely.
Hot glue the base of the marigold to the button on the stem. Finish the flower by wrapping the stem with floral tape.
