This would be first felt animal project - and I meant to challenge myself by making it small enough to fit snugly in one's palms. It does. :)
This would be first felt animal project - and I meant to challenge myself by making it small enough to fit snugly in one's palms. It does. :)
First, find an image of the animal of your choice (I chose to begin with an elephant). You could experiment with the colour (I went with turquoise for this one) and size of the elephant as desired. Prepare the needed pieces for stitching (both front and back of) the elephant's body and for (both) the ears and eyes.
Next, paste the round, white felt pieces (for the eyes) using craft glue. I made French knots using a little black thread for the elephant's pupils. You may also use small pieces of black felt for these. Then, sew on the elephant's ears on both front and back of the elephant's body. As can be seen here, I stitched about midway around both ears and left the back end of the ears unstitched so as to give the ears a natural (or 'flappable,' with some imagination) quality. :)
It helps to work on each (front and back) of the elephant's body before stitching them together. Fill your handheld elephant plushie with the desired amount of stuffing. Stitch along the outlines of the elephant's body to join the front and back of its body. (I used the running stitch here for a neater 'outline' effect but you could also use the blanket stitch for sewing along the outline of the elephant's body). I also added a tail by twisting about 1 1/2 inches of black embroidery thread and knotting it at the end. There you have it.. your very own cute felt elephant!
