I knew after several searches, most of the costumes for plus sized women were. . . let's just say they were not my style. The trick to making a good costume is to make the pieces simple, but jazz them up to look like they were more complicated.

1) I knew I needed a bustier / corset, but I knew I needed an easy pattern. I had a corset from another event, so on a piece of drafting paper I traced the entire shape of the corset with 1.5 inches extra for ease. I knew the fabric I was using wasn't stretchy like the corset.

2) After tracing the corset on the paper I went this awesome website: http://www.sewcurvy.com/corsetmakingnews_61053.html and realized the basic corset was really just 4 pieces. So I traced cut lines on the corset tracing and cut it into the 4 pieces.

3)After that I sewed the basic pieces together and just altered it to fit my shape the best I could. I was not going add the headache of using boning on this corset.

4) The skirt was easy. I just used an old faux suede skirt that I never wore anymore, cut out panels from the same fabric I used to make the corset and sewed them onto the altered skirt.

5) My least favorite part was adding the studs, but hey, they were important for the outfit.

6) The scorpion breastplate I made in honor of my zodiac sign, was sculpted out of this stuff called EZ-Form. http://shop.hobbylobby.com/products/e-z-form-plaster-cloth-wrap-76810/

7) I then made cuffs for my forearms and painted the zodiac symbol for Scorpio on them.

8) Finally, I made boot covers. http://greyfinch.livejournal.com/26087.html

9) I made my friend's costume, too. She's the lady in the middle with the dreadlocks.

1) Cut the neckline and sleeves off the first shirt. You should be left with a sort of tube that's all floppy and loose at the top. Pin the top together so that it rests above your bust.

2) Put the shirt on your dress form or on yourself. Start pinning up the sides until you reach the top, following the natural curves of your body.

3) Once it's pinned to fit your shape, carefully remove the dress.

4) Start sewing along the pin line, making sure not to deviate from the shape or stitch over the pins.

5) Try on once sewing is complete. Make any adjustments necessary. You should now have a fitted tube dress.

6) Take the sleeves you previously removed and cut the seams off until they lay flat. Put the tube back on yourself or the dress form and pin the sleeves with the finished edge facing inward.

7) Take off the dress.

8) Take the second shirt and remove the neckline, sleeves, and bottom hem. You should have a giant rectangle at this point. Cut the rectangle in half lengthwise, and then take each piece and cut in half again. Sew together at the short sides until you have one ridiculously long rectangle. Sew the last two open sides together and form a giant loop.

9) Pin the loop to the side seams of the dress. Start pleating the remainder of the loop in both front in back.

10) Once pleated and pinned, sew it down. You now have the bottom ruffle.

1) was for a dress needed for the children's show being done at my college. It was Cinderella's ball gown (the blue dress in the main pictures). I didn't make the gown, it was my old prom dress. It needed more poof so I added a netting skirt. (All the costumes had to be done in a few days. AHHHH!!! Needed poof quick!)
2) was when I wanted to be a female lolita version of the Mad Hatter. I wanted a poofy skirt to complete the look. And I only had a week until Halloween (AHHHH!! There's a pattern here.)

So, I made this happen after watching the Threadbanger tutu tutorial and realizing that I had NO TIME or patience to do tulle stripes gathered together.

It's really good and I'm sure I'll use it for more costumes in the future. Try it out :) Sorry if this is confusing. If you have any questions or comments (awkward or not), please let me know.

I thought the fabric in this thrifted night shirt was pretty. I wanted to do something to it that would be cute and comfy. Since it was a 3x, I decided to make a romper nightie out of it.

This was my first romper so I learned a lot in the process. I've even figured out how to make one from scratch. I'll be making a lot of these as it is cute and comfy. If you have any tips on how this how-to could be better send em my way...I'm eager to learn new techniques.

What do you think?

Rockabilly Jumpsuit And Shrug

with how-to for the shrug!

When you go shopping these days you can´t deny there are jumpsuits everywhere you look. i wanted one too, but didn´t find the one i liked (as always...) In the Burda Style magazine (July issue) was a jumpsuit pattern and i decided to give it a try. Although i changed the pattern a bit (as always...:))
I used black jersey and red jersey with printed rockabilly images.
The jumpsuit consists of shorts, i added straps at the hem for a bloomers effect, a belt, a tubetop with yoke, pockets.
The shrug is basically made from the red jersey and has black jersey edging. i wanted something to match with the romper, because it is off-shoulder and i feel cold very fast. furthermore, i created some kind of extreme crop top, a thing i want to own for a while! the pattern i used was in an ancient burda magazine, it was a sweater and i just cut it to the length i wanted. you can probably use a sweater you own as pattern.
i recommend to use a serger for the seams because it´s made from jersey and i don´t trust zigzag and a normal stepstitch in this case, but you can try it!
the black jersey was a bargain and the red i got for free because i purchased four yards from the lady that sell these and she had this 4+1 for free thing. all in all, it costs me about 5€.
sorry, no pics with my head at the moment... and maybe, just maybe i should tidy up my craft room...

The general shape and build is inspired by the Alexander McQueen clutches, even though eyeglass/sunglass cases obviously weren't used in the original designs.

If you make your own clutch (whether the design is inspired by a McQueen clutch or is a style that's all you) you'll probably save a few thousand dollars.....just saying.

I love backseam stockings. However, true back seams cost a tremendous amount of money because of the manufacturing process. Being a girl on a budget, I resort to mock seam stockings (looks like a back seam stocking, but the seam is false and the stocking is one piece not two). And these are still $10-15 a pair, and poorly made! I end up catching a run after a couple uses. So I scoured the internet for mock seam tutorials, to no avail. I ended up figuring them out myself, and figured I'd share XP Practice on some old tights or stockings before you try to use nice hose!

**These need a garter belt or garter to stay up and for the seams to stay straight! The pictures can't be fully seen unless clicked! You need to to see the detailed pictures.**

For example these lovely platform/peeptoe/leopard print/stilletoes. All the qualities that makes a shoe, well. perfect in my humble opinion. Add to that they where the last pair in the shop, that they where on sale, and they where in fact FIVE POUNDS, I had to buy them. Only one complication. They're a size 6, where I'm a size 5. No matter, I thought. Heel sizes are a bit different I tried to tell myself, I'll make them fit. Wrong. Short of stuffing the backs with loo roll (which YOU KNOW would trail out mortifyingly at an inconvienent time and place) I was stuck. They hung on my shoe rack for months, imploring me to wear them until I happened to remember, the night before my friends birthday, that SHE was indeed a size 6! I would make them shiny and give them to her! I did have an hour of turmoil, not wanting to relinquish the beautiful shoes. But it was For The Greater Good, for I could never wear them.

Sorry about lack of making pictures, I did this in haste in the early hours.
It took me this long through trial, error and tantrums, if you are a serene person you could probably do it faster.
