Faux Butterfly Shadowbox Curiosity Cabinet

First gather your supplies. What kinds of brands you prefer for these products are up to you. The size of the shadow box is up to you as well. You can use regular printer paper, but it tends to curl up and show the white behind it. Therefore, it doesn't look as great. Matter photo paper is sturdy and has less curling from the ink. You can either use black nail polish or black acrylic paint. This is up to you. Not picture: mod podge
The first thing you should do is print and cut out your butterflies. Make sure no white of the paper is showing. This will help it look as realistic as possible. I have attached two hi-res images for you to use. However, a great way to find images for these kinds of projects is by going to google images. Search for "butterfly images" "scientific butterfly illustration" "vintage butterfly illustration" and then change your search settings to only show LARGE images.
After you have cut out your butterflies, play around with background ideas. Place your butterflies atop a variety of decorative papers (if you plan on using them).
Then you should size up your decorative paper to the backing of your shadow box. Cut and glue to the backing with a thin layer of Mod Podge. I used blue because I liked the contrast between the butterflies and the background.
Next you should unroll some fishing line and start painting it black with nail polish or acrylic paint. Let it dry. Then using a hot glue gun and your painted fishing line, attach to the back of your butterflies to mimic the antennas.
Attaching is the easiest part. You will take your straight pins and push them through the center of your faux butterflies. Then press them into the backing of your shadowbox. Then you are finished!
