This years Halloween Costume. I made the dress myself using an open source pattern from Burdastyle called the coffee date dress(see the link). Start by making a sketch of how you would like your wings to look. This will give you a better idea of the way you will need to bend your wire. I wanted my wings to be small rasied ones.
Take your wire and hold behind your back while looking in a mirror to get an idea about what size wing span you would like. I cut my wire to one meter in lenght and then bent it into a V shape. Hold behind your back again and using a mirror decide on where to make you second bend. I made made mine 18cm from the ends of the wire. This should form a shape like that shown in the picture. If you want to make more traditional wings you will probably need a longer piece of wire and to make your second bend a curve.
With the remaining wire form a horseshoe shape and attach to the middle of your wings. This should stop your wings flopping backwards when you wear them. However I made my elastic so tight that in the end I didn't need it. It's up to you. If you can bend your wire easily bend the ends around to fix the horseshoe in place. I couldn't and so used a large amount of packing tape.
Measure each wing. They should be the same lenght. If not your pieces of fabric in the next step will need to be different lenghts.
Cut two pieces of white fabric to the lenght of one wing + 1 cm by the width you want x 2. The width will be how long you want your wings to drop down. I used 20cm. My wings were each 45 cm long so I cut two pieces of fabric 46 by 40 cm. Next fold both pieces of fabric in half and pin along the folded edge. You could experiment with shapes other than rectangles to give your wings different shapes.
Sew along each folded piece 1cm from the fold. Then sew up one end so that your wire won't go straight through.
Create small random slits in the bottom of fabric, that is the edge that is not folded,using scissors and then tear upwards.
Fit fabric onto wire.
Cut strips from the remaining fabric and wrap them around your frame to cover the wire.
Take your elastic (I used bra strap elastic that I brought from my local sewing store) and wrap around the backs of your shoulders to the front to work out the lenght you need. I used 1m (50 cm for each shoulder) and it was a bit too short to give you an idea. Sew the ends of the two pieces of the elastic together to form two loops and then sew onto your frame. At this point use your needle and thread to sew some of the strips of fabric together and sew the fabric wings to the strips on the frame to stop the whole lot sliding apart. Ta Dah your finished! * As you can see by this time I had pulled off the horseshoe support.
