Not quiet so "everyday" You think it's a charming pattern, but you don't like knitted shoulders to your vests? To ring the changes and turn it into an opera-top vest is very simple. You work exactly as given for the original vest as far as the beginning of the neck and armhole shaping. Here you cast off right across. Work the back to correspond, then join the side seams and work the picot edge as given in the instructions all round the top. Thread ribbon through the edging and sew on the shoulder straps. The photograph on page 9 shows the set worked in a very fine wool. You will see how slim fitting the vest and panties set can be, and quite suitable for wearing under a slim-fitting frock. The wool used is a specially fine 2-ply wool, and the whole set can be made with 4 oz.
The sketch of the opera-top vest shows it worked in a fascinating alternative stitch called the zigzag rib. It is very simple to knit ; here are the instructions:- Zigzag Rib.-Use a number of stitches divisible by 5 plus 1. 1st row.-* P. 3, k. 2 tog., m. 1; rep. from * to last st., p. 1. 2nd row.-K. 1, * p. 2, k. 3 ; rep. from * to end of row. 3rd row.-* P. 3, k. 2; rep. from * to last st., p. 1. 4th row.-As 2nd row. 5th row.-* P. 3, m. 1, k. 2 tog. ; rep. from * to last st., p. 1. 6th row.-As 2nd row. 7th row.-As 2rd row. 8th row.-As 2nd row. These 8 rows form the patt.
