This is a tutorial for envelope backed pillows
This is a tutorial for envelope backed pillows
Measure your pillow form - add 1/2" to the measurements. My pillow for this tutorial is 13 x 24, I cut my background fabric 13-1/2" x 24-1/2" for the front of the pillow. For seasonal pillows, I use pillows I have in the house, this JOY pillow will only be used for a few weeks. For the back of the pillow, I use a bit of math. I like my envelope to be off center, really about 3/4 of the pillow. I took that measurement of 24" and mulitplied it by 75% or 24 x .75 += 18. I add 3 inches to the 18, which is 21 (this will be called Back A). The 3 inches for the finished edge we will be creating. So for one side of the back will be 13-1/2" x 21. For the other side I use the 24 x .25 = 6 inches. I add 4-5 inches to this, for the overlap in the envelope back. So the second back piece is cut 13-1/2" x 11" (this will be called Back B)
Take Back A turn under 1/2" on the short side. Press.
Turn under again, this time 2". Press again.
Stitch at the fold. Set aside Back A aside for now.
Now we are ready for Back B. On this one turn under the short end 1/2" - Press, then turn under another 1/2" and press. Stitch this into place.
Place the front of the pillow (with your appliqued lettering) face up. Place Back A, right side down onto the front of the pillow. Right sides will be facing.
Place Back B on the other side, making sure all raw edges are even. PIn in place.
I like a tighter pillow, so I stitch 1/2" all around the pillow. If you like a looser pillow go with 1/4" I like to do a gentle curve at the corners, this helps the pillow form fill out all of the pillow. Trim corners if you would like.
At this time, turn your pillow right sides out through the envelope back. Press the pillow and insert the pillow form.
