How to make a very pretty cushion cover suing just scraps of fabric and a few simple embroidery stitches.

Instructions

I started with a Sublime Stitching Pillow Cover, which is a beautifully made envelope style cover all ready for embellishment, and the Sublime Stitching Mexican Loteria design sheet. I chose the Rose "LA ROSA" as my centre design, the rounded bunting with roses as well. Just cut your chosen design from the design sheet..

  2. Small 105138 2f2014 10 26 163914 close%2bup%2bof%2bbunting

Iron the design onto the pillow cover by placing it face down and pressing with an iron. Position the design carefully as once it's on, it's not coming off! You can use each design multiple times, it will just get a little lighter each time. I used the bunting a total of 8 times each and it was still visible. Next iron the design onto your scrap fabric too and cut out. Cut out pieces of the hemming tape in the same shape and then sandwich the hemming tape between the floral fabric and the design on the pillow cover and iron into place. This will hold it all nicely as you embroider.

Blanket stitch around the bunting using 2 strands of embroidery thread, use back stitch for the other details. I used a mixture of thread colours to match with the mix of fabrics used. To create the ribbon rose stitch a 5 stitch "star" centrally over each rose on the design with thread.

Thread a length of ribbon onto a needle (you need 5 -6 " of ribbon for each rose) then push up through the fabric near to the centre of the star. Leave a short tail of ribbon on the inside. Start weaving the ribbon under and then over each stitch of the star.

    Continue going round and round...

..until the rose design is all covered.

  7. Small 105138 2f2014 10 26 164826 rose%2bpart%2b5

When you are finished just poke the needle back to the inside and tie the ribbon ends together to secure.

For the Rose I just cut the petal shape from floral fabric, layered it with the iron on hemming tape in the same way as the bunting and then edged it with blanket stitch and working the petal detail with back stitch.

The stem and leaves are green thread working in backstitch.

To finish I added some personalisation with a name. I printed it on the computer in Vladamir Script font size 140.

I placed this under the fabric pillow cover and pined it securely.

Then traced over the letters with a air disappearing pen. You could just use a faint pencil line.

I worked the names in 2 strands of thread, just to make them stand out a little. That's it, finished. I love the texture from the ribbon roses, but they do make it a little tricky to iron when you are finished! They could easily be working in backstitch too if you prefer.
