'Elixir Of Life' Potion Necklace

A potion bottle necklace inspired by Harry Potter =)

About

This was made as a present for one of my younger sisters for her birthday. She wanted a Harry Potter potion necklace, which could be anything as long it was blue. I chose the Elixir of Life, as it sounds pretty cool and I don't think it had a specified colour in the books (at least, not that I can remember).
I had most the materials already, but bought the necklace chain (silver-plated) from Ebay. Everything else can either be bought from sites like Ebay and Etsy, and/or craft shops; minus the PC and printer obviously! The bottles can be hard to find, but this particular one I got in a wholesale lot from China on Ebay.
This project can be adapted to suit you - you could change the colour of the potion, use a different label or different charms etc. I would recommend that it be kept upright when not being worn, just in case, although I tested the seal (and dropped it - oops!) and it hasn't leaked.

You Will Need (13 things)

  • Spray Adhesive
  • Jewellery Pliers
  • Tiny Glass Bottle with cork
  • Water
  • Pc & Printer with paper and choice of fonts
  • Food Coloring
  • Candle
  • Instant Coffee
  • Screw Eye(s)
  • Hot Glue Gun
  • 22 in Necklace Chain W/ Clasp
  • Lock and Key Charm(s)
  • Jump Ring(s)

Steps (10 steps, 90 minutes)

  1. 1

First, get your materials and tools together. I used a 2ml bottle (about 35mm high), and a silver-plated chain. The chain had slightly smaller links than I expected, so I had to use smaller jump rings.

  2. 2

Fill the bottle with coloured water - I used blue food colouring.

  3. 3

Use the hot glue gun on the cork around the bottom edge and on the bottom. Try to cover it completely around the circumference. Place into the bottle and hold for a few seconds to let it set. Leave for a while before removing any excess.

  4. 4

Screw in the screw eye into the cork.

  5. 5

Get the necklace chain, and add a jump ring with the pliers onto a link in the middle of the chain. Leave open.

  6. 6

Attach the bottle to the jump ring on the chain, and close firmly with the pliers.

  7. 7

Open another jump ring, and add the charms onto it. Attach the jump ring onto the hook on the bottle and close it firmly.

  8. 8

For the label, find a font you like (you can download loads for free online). Mine was called 'Scriptina'. Print the name of the potion, and make sure it is the right size.
I made it look old by using instant coffee. I mixed it into a paste and just dabbed it on with my finger unevenly. Then, when it was dry, I used a candle to burn the edges - be careful not to go too far like I nearly did! Do it in steps and blow out the flames very quickly.

  9. 9

Add the label onto the bottle using spray adhesive. Hold it there for a while to let it set.

  10. 10

And there you go, all finished =)
