In our house sushi is a common meal. We make it as well as eat out. I had a few measuring tapes hanging around, and decided to do something fun with them.... Of course, you can use this tutorial to make any design you want your tape to be. That's the great thing about felt! I have an ice cream version of this project as well... the cherry is the pull tab...
Make shrimp body...Take pink felt & cut like the picture, use orange to make main lines
Use lighter orange sharpie & draw around the "main" line.
Cut 2 pink heart, this will be the tail of your shrimp (ebi)... and the pull tab for your tape!
Sew heart onto end of tape measure, then use other heart and whip stitch together, making a "sandwich" of felt, tape end, felt....
make a white pouch (rice) that will fit the main body of the measuring tape. stitching three sides & leaving top open. Cut your green strip (nori) too. This will need to be long enough to wrap around the bottom of your "rice".
put a little filler stuffing into the pocket, enough so that the "housing" is secure... make sure that tail (heart) is sticking out. Do not over stuff or you won't be able to push the button on the tape measure...
Place shrimp body at top of pocket and begin to whip stitch edges of shrimp to pocket... start from the middle of your ebi... and sew one side.. then the other...
Do not stitch heart (tail) into place. Remember this is the tab you pull when you measure and that it is suppose to move freely...
Last, glue (or sew) your green strip (nori) around the bottom of your rice.. Tada! Good enough to eat!
Now test out your measuring tape. Make sure you can pull it out, and retract.
