You Will Need (3 things)

  • Enough Cotton to wrap around the widest part of your hips twice.
  • Ribbon (optional)
  • Elastic

Steps (11 steps, 90 minutes)

  1. 1

Start with one huuge piece of fabric.
The long side should measure twice around the widest part of your hips (and a little more depending on how gathered you want it to be) e.g. 2m, and the shorter side should be the length you want, from the top of the dress to the bottom + 6cm.

  2. 2

You also need a smaller piece of fabric, this should also measure twice the largest part of your hips on the long side, but for the shorter side should be the length of where you want your elastic to attach to about 10cm shorter than the actual dress.

  3. 3

I did a zig zag stick down this piece to stop it fraying instead of hemming it.

  4. 4

Pin this piece on the rough side of the fabric (duller pattern side if you're using patterned fabric), where you'd like your elastic to pull in at the waist.

  5. 5

Sew along the top of this piece, then a little further down to create a tube (eg, my elastic was 1cm thick so I made a 2.5cm tube).

  6. 6

After that, at the top of the dress fold it over to create another tube and sew.

  7. 7

Then hem the bottom of the dress.

You need to get 2 pieces of elastic ready, one which is comfortable around your waist to go through the middle tube, and one for above the bust for the top tube.

  8. 8

The next part is kinda tricky and ended up getting me a little frustrated... We have to thread the elastic through the tubes. Do this by putting a safety pin in the end of the elastic and wiggling it through. I got my sister to hold the end while I wiggled :)

    thanks Jade, you're awesome :)

  9. 9

Once you've done your elastic and tied/sewn the ends, its just a matter of sewing down the side of your dress to close the edge!

  10. 10

You can add straps if you like, I did but then removed them because I changed my mind, but its up to you :)

  11. 11

Here you go, your own simple summer dress!
