I needed something quick and easy to wear for the 4th and since I'm battling an icky sicky weekend it needed to be comfortable.
Start by folding your fabric in half twice on the fold so you can cut out the front and back at the same time. Place a fitted t-shirt folded in half on the fold and trace around it.
Determine how long you want your dress, I decided to go with a maxi so I can curl up in it since I'm sick this 4th of july weekend and I want to be comfortable.
Trace out sleeves for your dress using your arm holes as a guide. Pin your shoulder seams together and sew either using a zig zag stitich or a serger. Next Pin your sleeves in place and sew using your prefered method.
Fold your dress right sides together and sew down from your arms down to your hem (or if you want slits in your dress like I've decided, to wear you want your slits to start)
Next hem the slits of your dress, place tissue paper under your fabric to prevent your fabric from warping. I sewed up my slits using a straight stitch since I don't need this part to to stretch.
Remove the tissue paper by tearing it off with your fingers. Use a seam ripper or tweezers to remove any small pieces stuck under the thread.
Hem your sleeves and the bottom of your dress using a stretch stitch. I decided to use a fancy figure 8 stitch but a regular zig-zag stitch will work just as well for this.
Cut out a piece of rib knit for your neck line. I used a contrasting red that matched the thread choice I made as well. Fold in half and sew or serge the ends together.
Fold your rib knit in half lengthwise, pin and sew your neckline in place. I used my serger for this as well but you can use a zig-zag stitch.
Finish by sewing a small zig-zag stitch, double straight stitch or figure 8 stitch along the bottom of your necline so that your rib knit lays flat- I recommend using tissue paper for this as well to keep it from warping. I was lazy and didn't for this step so I had some slight warping to my neckline but not so bad that I didn't mind.
