Steps (11 steps, 480 minutes)

  1. 1

Start by measuring the wall where you want to apply the planks- width of wall and how high you want the plank application. Then decide if you want multiple boards on each row of your wall or one continuous board.

Head to your local home improvement store to buy your materials.

Our wall was just over 10 ft. long and we applied the boards 70 inches high and opted to do one continuous board for each row.

We bought 8 ft long x 6 in wide pre primed MDF boards. We also bought 2 in boards to fill in the gaps on the ends and then 3 in boards to frame out the whole wall. Then a 12 ft x 4 in. board to use as a ledger board and a small piece of molding to use under the ledge.

  2. 2

Begin by removing the baseboards on the wall where you will be applying the plank wall treatment.

  3. 3

Place the small 2 in. pieces vertical on each end using some liquid nails and a nail gun.

  4. 4

Once the end pieces are attached, begin applying the planks.

  5. 5

Use nickels along the top edge of the boards for spacing between each board.

  6. 6

Work your way up the wall. You will have to cut the wood to expose any electrical outlets on the wall.

  7. 7

Once the main plank is complete, use the 3 in boards to cover the 2 in. end pieces so it frames out the planks.

  8. 8

Attach the 4 in board on the top for a picture ledge along with the small piece of molding under it for a little added support.

  9. 9

Next step is to fill any holes, caulk the side boards, the top ledger board and molding and give everything a good sanding. Also, tape off any areas around the wall to prep for paint.

  10. 10

    Now- Paint your wall.
We used a paint sprayer to paint the wall but you can easily just use a brush and roller as well.

  11. 11

Once your paint dries, you are done! Sit back and admire your hard work! :)
