This kit was given to me free via CutOutAndKeep and MakersKit to test, review and make this tutorial. Who doesn't love getting free crafting supplies, let alone DIY Kits?! Of course I was going to say yes! This kit is a Jewelry Stamping Kit, which allows you to stamp your own brass tags, dog tags and other metals/materials that you can think of. This is the kit before I opened it to get ready to make some awesome homemade stamped jewelry!
Inside the kit includes, a full metal alphabet & number set including an "&" symbol, a hammer, some brass blanks, brass split jump rings, brass ball and chain necklace, and some leather cord.
Now to get your station set up, I chose to do this on a thick butcher block cutting board I have, but a standard workbench or concrete floor will work just as good, something hard that won't break/fracture/imprint when you go to hammer the letters/numbers into the brass/metal plates. You also want to have tape and some cardboard ready.
First decide what you are going to stamp onto your metal plate, I chose to do a name tag for my cat Tang because he is an indoor/outdoor cat and doesn't have a name tag only a rabies tag. So obviously I pulled out the Letters T-A-N-G. Remember the letters are backwards when you look at them and you have to watch what way to stamp them so that they are correctly placed.
Before stamping the metal plates I suggest on the piece of cardboard you have practicing your stamping, you want to learn how each letter is, I noticed my T and A are a little angled so I have to adjust that to make them straight. And when you hit the letters with the hammer you want to only do 1-2 hard blows not many little ones. It helps if you hold the letters firmly towards the bottom that way they won't really slip and you shouldn't hit your fingers if you happen to miss.
Now that your ready you can either tape the metal plate to the cardboard like I did or straight to the work surface of your choice. I taped it so I have a little guide line of where I am going to put the name "TANG". If you want you can use a pencil and ruler and make markings on the plate so you know where you are placing the name, saying or whatever you choose to put on the plate.
When you are ready go ahead and hammer in the name, saying or whatever you chose to do. After you are done you can leave it as is or take a Sharpie/Permanent Marker and trace the letters in the using a paper towel wipe off the marker around it and it will leave the color in the letters.
Now to put the plate on the necklace, you will need the necklace itself and a split jump ring. Attached the jump ring to the plate then add it to the necklace. For demo purposes I put it on a necklace, I will then put it on my cats collar after I am done.
And there you go as simple as that! Your very own handmade stamped plate necklace!
