Sammi: a seam ripper should do the trick in trying to take the elastic off. It may take a little time, though, and the sides may be a little longer than the rest of the shirt.
Timetoexperiment: I've washed it a few times. As with most tshirt cutting projects, the strips did curl up on themselves a little, but the overall look was kept in tact.
I've done a bit of work with t-shirts... primarily in the form of t-shirt yarn. Which makes me ask... have you tried washing it? I worry it might become distorted in the laundry if you toss it in with the regular wash.
