About

This is a brief walkthrough of my process when I draw eyes. I like to keep things very simple and quick so I can capture my character's intentions and mood easily and move onto the rest of the face. Everyone has a different way of doing things but following the steps below may help you a little on while your trying to recreate someone's likeness!

You Will Need (2 things)

  • Pencil
  • Paper

Steps (6 steps, 5 minutes)

  1. 1

I think it's important to know where your eyes are gonna end up. Sketch out the general shape of the head along with some horizontal and vertical lines so you get an idea of where things should be placed.

  2. 2

Stick those eyes on the head you just sketched! If the head is rotated, take into account that one eye should be slightly smaller since it is a little bit farther away.

  3. 3

Now you're going to add the eyelash (which kinda makes the eye look like an apostrophe). This part's easy!

  4. 4

Okay 3 small steps here: add a circle of color for the iris. The bottom of the iris should be a little lighter than the rest. Add a black circle on top of that for the pupil, and keep in mind that the placement of the pupil can change the eye's direction.

  5. 5

Dot those eyes! Stick some eyebrows on there to add some emotion. You can also suggest eyelids with a small line on either end of each eye. See below for some extra tips!

  6. 6

Eyes are the most expressive part of the face. There are subtle changes you can make to differentiate between a female eye and a male eye (there are always exceptions to these rules however.) Explore different variations to capture multiple expressions!
