This came from seeing a diamond mural in the completely awesome book "Home Studio Home" from the decorating series by Todd Oldham. It shows real people's home... full of lots of ideas. The diamonds in the original were wonky, all different colours and on a much larger wall. Fecal Face magazine shows some pages from Home Studio Home. You can see the diamond mural there :) ( grabbed the book photo from this page) http://www.fecalface.com/SF/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=1382&Itemid=88 I chose to do this over our mantle.

Sorry I didn't get a photo of the first step without paint. Clean the wall with water (shocking, but they can be very dirty) and let it dry over night. Take 2 foot lengths of tape and start putting them on the wall in a cross cross pattern. I tried longer lengths, but it's harder to control putting it down. Just make sure the tape is stuck down, or the paint won't stay where it is supposed to. Don't worry if the diamonds don't match up. Wonky is better.
Start painting in the diamonds. I went for a random pattern. I only had a sample pot of shiny wall paint and some white wall paint. I added drops of gouche to the wall paint and mixed it to get the other colours. I wanted a matte finish on the colours, so I didn't want to use straight acrylic paint. Using the white wall paint as a base made sure the finish was smooth and not too thick. But it was runny a bit.
CAREFULLY peel off the tape. I left it over night... rather than peel off while the paint was still wet. Then I learned the adhesive on the tape was stronger than the bond of the original wall paint to the old wall surface... and... inevitably paint chipped off! It was so sad. I did try to be careful, but apparently lost the run of myself.
Fix errors with clouds! So we came up with the idea of painting clouds over the missing holes.. then I had to add a few more for balance. And voila!
