You Will Need (19 things)

  • Glue Gun
  • Button(s)
  • 16 x 12 in. (40 x 30 cm) Pillow pad
  • 18 in. (45 cm) coordinating Trim
  • Sewing Thread
  • 24 in. (60 cm) blue Rick Rack Trim
  • 24 in. (60 cm) orange Rick Rack Trim
  • 2 pieces of plain Muslin each 17 x 13 in. (43 x 33 cm) or to fit the pillow pad
  • 10 x 24 in. (25 x 60 cm) striped Fabric
  • 23 x 24 in. (57.5 x 60 cm) Bondaweb
  • 13 x 24 in. (33 x 60 cm) coral Fabric
  • Sewing Machine
  • Iron
  • Scraps of plain Muslin
  • Heat Transfer Paper
  • 21/4 yd (2 m) of 17 in. (43 cm) wide heavyweight striped deck chair Fabric
  • Scissors
  • Vintage Postcard s and photos
  • Deck Chair frame with removable batons

Steps (8 steps, 240 minutes)

  1. 1

    With the deck chair frame flat, measure the length
    and add on enough extra to fold the fabric over
    the wooden batons and for a hem at each end. Cut
    the deck chair fabric to this measurement.

    Use a scanner or color photocopier to copy the postcards or vintage photos onto heat transfer paper, following the
    manufacturer’s instructions. Cut the images out and
    transfer directly onto the deck chair fabric. Alternatively, transfer the images onto plain muslin and then cut and stitch onto the fabric.

    Fold over each end of the fabric into a small hem, then
    fold again to make a channel for the batons. Stitch along
    the first fold line with the sewing machine.

    Cut the coral fabric into one strip 18 x 31/4 in.
    (45 x 8 cm), one strip 13 x 31/4 in. (33 x 8 cm), and
    two strips each 223/4 x 31/4 in. (58 x 8 cm). Cut the striped fabric into one strip 18 x 61/4 in. (45 x 6 cm),
    one strip 13 x 61/4 in. (33 x 6 cm), and two strips 223/4 x 61/4 in. (58 x 6 cm). Apply Bondaweb to the back of
    each strip, following the manufacturer’s instructions.

    Iron the strips to one piece of the muslin to create the
    Union Jack. Zigzag stitch the orange and blue rick rack
    onto the diagonals to complete the design. Zigzag along
    all raw edges and then add the buttons.

    Place the two pieces of muslin RS together and machine
    stitch around the sides and bottom, leaving the top open.
    Turn out and press. Insert the pillow pad.

    Fold the remaining length of deck chair fabric in half. Place the cushion on top, with open raw edges aligned with the raw edges of the flap, and machine stitch together. Press the seam allowance toward the flap. Use the glue gun to fix a length of decorative trim over the seam allowance to hide the raw edges.

    Just one thing...

    Vintage postcards and
    photos can often be found at
    yard sales or antique shops if
    you do not have any of your
    own. They must be scanned
    or photocopied onto the
    transfer paper—you cannot
    use the originals—so it's fine
    to use items of sentimental
    value because the originals
    will not be damaged.
    If you don't want a Union
    Jack design on your pillow,
    make up your own design in
    appliqué or embroidery.

    Turn the deck chair cover
    over. Align the fold of
    the flap on the cushion
    along the bottom fold of
    the channel at the top of
    the deck chair. Machine
    stitch the flap to the
    deck chair cover along the
    existing channel stitching
    line—the cushion will hang
    over the front of the deck
    chair on the flap of
    fabric. Use the batons to
    attach the cover onto the
    deck chair.
