We needed a pantry in our home and had a big ugly green cabinet that my husband has had forever. So I grabbed our Elmers glue and 2 different color of paint and crackled away.
First I washed the cabinet with TSP and water. Then I primed it and painted on the base color. In the back area I paint it red, The front panels were added later to help the piece pop. Once the paint is completely dry the fun starts. You can use the glue straight from the bottle, which will give a larger crackle or watered down a little for a finer crackle. The next 2 steps will have to be done rather quickly.
Make sure your second color of paint is mixed, open and ready to use. Use your foam brush and paint the glue mixture onto the surface and spread it out with up and down strokes. Wait about a min. until glue is tacky but still opaque. Now brush on the second color, working top to bottom. Now just sit back and watch as the paint dries. The top layer of paint slowly separates as the glue dries. Once your item is completely dry spray it a few times with a clear coat of polyacrylic to protect it.
