An alternative to knitted cast off - and easy to use a bigger hook to make a looser edge

Holding work right side towards you, insert crochet hook as if to knit the first stitch...

and wrap yarn from back to front over hook, pull yarn through stitch...

and slip stitch off the left hand needle.

Repeat action on next stitch...

and when pulling through the stitch...

drop it from the left needle and at the same time pull through stitch on crochet hook too - leaving one stitch on the hook. Repeat action to the end of the row, cut yarn and pass through final loop, to secure.
