Crayola Crayon Fancy Dress

About

My little sister turned 18 in 2010 (which was all kinds of scary!) and threw a huge fancy dress party. One of my friends jokingly suggested I go as my internet namesake, a Crayola crayon.

I thought it was an excellent idea. I would've gone as my CO+K, Hot Pink namesake, but I couldn't find a pink tube dress, and didn't have a sewing machine at the time to make my own, so I went for purple, my second favourite colour. Also easier to find. You could make this in any colour though. Make ones for your friends in different colours and have a group night out!

The duck in the photo is my handbag by the way. I wanted something childish and a charity shop yielded that little gem!

You Will Need (6 things)

  • Killer High Heels
  • Thin Cardboard
  • Plastic Headband
  • Black Sharpie
  • Flared Skirt
  • Tube Dress

Steps (7 steps, 30 minutes)

  1. 1

Buy a cheap tube dress (I got mine from Ebay) Or make your own. (They're easy to make, just two rectangles as long as you want the dress to be, sew down either side and voila! A stretchy fabric works best).
Down the side, draw the Crayola logo using your Sharpie. I think I drew one on both sides, but one will be fine if you'd prefer.

  2. 2

Again with the sharpie, draw the wiggly lines at the top and bottom.
This is not a good explanation or drawing, but google 'crayola crayon' and you will see what I mean.

  3. 3

If you're daring (or didn't mess up like me and got a dress that was actually long enough!) you can skip this step.
If not, add a ruffled skirt in the same colour. I got mine from a charity shop, or again you could make a simple circle skirt, or just sew a fabric trim to the dress.

  4. 4

For the hat, cut a circle in your cardboard. Mine was the size of a side plate. Cut a wedge out so it looks kinda like pacman.

  5. 5

Join the cut sides to make a cone shape using selotape (or glue if you're less impatient than me!)

  6. 6

Cut two horizontal slits near the edge of your cone on either side, and slide the plastic headband through to hold in place. Voila - a pointed crayon top!

  7. 7

Team the dress and headband with some killer heels. In my case, these heels were literal killers - sometimes we have to sacrifice comfort for beauty...
