When you have just mad a project and have forgotten about what buttons you might use, self covered buttons could be the answer. I have a stash of buttons, but even then sometimes you can't find the perfect match. This is the first time I've used these, really easy and look really professional. No tools needed either. I might get some more these to keep in the stash.

Gather what you need
Cut out circles of fabric about twice the size of the button, mine had a template you could you on the pack.
Sew around the outside with a running stitch.
Pull up and tie the thread, so that it will all be tucked in.
Place back on and push down. I used an old spool of thread, but anything with a hole in will no doubt work just as well. now all the rough fried edges are hidden and you've got a nice neat button to sew on to your project. I used mine n a pair on PJs!
A nice easy project and handy to have in.
