Okay, so I have a hideously ugly toilet lid top. I am not proud of this. I had placed a piece of denim over the lid for awhile, but I wanted something nicer, with hemmed edges. So here's an easy way to make a cover for your lid, whether it is ugly or not!
Okay, so I have a hideously ugly toilet lid top. I am not proud of this. I had placed a piece of denim over the lid for awhile, but I wanted something nicer, with hemmed edges. So here's an easy way to make a cover for your lid, whether it is ugly or not!
You will need a piece of lightweight denim or other fabric of your choice about 2" longer all the way around the bottom lip of your lid. You will also need a piece of 1/4" elastic about half the length of the circumference of the fabric. Also scissors, thread, sewing machine, an iron and pins. Place a small plate at each corner and mark a curve and cut.
Sew a gathering stitch at each curved corner.
Gather the corners gently so they begin to roll under.
Iron the hem which is about a 1" hem. Then pin in place.
Sew the hem and make sure you leave a 2" space not hemmed for the elastic to go through. Sew about a 5/8" hem so that your 1/4" elastic will fit within the hem.
Place a small safety pin on one end of the elastic and feed the elastic through the hem. When you get to the end, sew the elastic together. Make sure the elastic is out of the way and sew the 2" space with your 5/8" hem.
Evenly distribute the gathers around the lid cover.
See? I told you it was ugly! Really the rest of the bathroom is really cute! Now place your cover over the lid and stretch the gathers evenly around.
Put some pretties or other sundries on top and ta da! Now the neighbors won't talk!
