I used heavier fabric (home dec). Cut two (2) pieces to 16"tall x 18"wide rectangles, and two (2) strips to 20"long x 3"wide. On the larger pieces, fold down the top 1" and hide the top edge (Two 1" folds) and sew (I did two rows of stitching). Line up the larger pieces, wrong sides together and sew the sides and bottoms together, with 1/2" seams and curves at the bottom. Turn right side out. For the handles: Fold long strips in half (wrong sides facing) and sew along the length, leaving both ends open. Turn right side out and press flat. Double fold the ends of strips to 1" (Two 1/2" folds, hiding the edge). Sew each folded end of strips to opening rim of bag at 4" in from corner and align on both sides. I use the traditional box with an X in the middle for added strength. You're done! Note about fabric: As this is a reusable grocery/shopping sack, use durable, easily washable fabrics with a heavier weight. No point in saving the environment if you just contaminate your sack and can't wash it! Making a bunch for Xmas... but great to have on had as last minute gifts. The prefect bag for groceries.
