I’ve always loved the fashion of the 1920s—the Charleston, cigarette holders, bobbed hair, red lipstick, and kohl-rimmed eyes all appeal to my inner flapper—to me they are the pinnacle of feminine glamour. But my all‑time favorite look from this era is the iconic cloche hat. I love everything about a cloche. I adore the way it couches the wearer in mystery, keeping the eyes in shadow and showing off pouty lips. I also love the fact that the domed top adds a bit of height to my 5-foot-2-inch frame. In my opinion, a cloche can make anyone look and feel just a bit more elegant than usual. Cloche Hat Sizing This hat is designed to fit an average-size woman’s head. Brim With both yarns held together, CO 70 stitches to a circular needle. Pm and join to knit in the round. Work even in stockinette stitch until piece measures 3.5 in/9 cm. Next row: (K2tog, k15) 3 times, k2 tog, k17. 66 stitches. Bind off.
Crown Pick up and knit 66 stitches from the inside (WS) of bound-off edge. This will create the welt detail around the brim. Rounds 1–6 Knit. Round 7 *K2tog, k9, repeat from * to end of round. 60 stitches. Round 8 and all even rows Knit. Round 9 *K2tog, k8, repeat from * to end of round. 54 stitches. Round 11 *K2tog, k7, repeat from * to end of round. 48 stitches. Round 13 *K2tog, k6, repeat from * to end of round. 42 stitches. Round 15 *K2tog, k5, repeat from * to end of round. 36 stitches. Finishing Cut yarn leaving a 10-in/25-cm tail. Using a yarn needle draw the tail through the remaining 8 stitches. Pull tightly and secure. Weave in all ends on wrong side of cloche.
Felting Felt according to instructions here - http://www.cutoutandkeep.net/projects/felting-101. If felting by machine, keep close watch on your cloche so that the brim doesn’t curl up. This hat looks and feels best if you can still see some stitch definition. This yarn combination felts quickly, and overfelting will result in a super dense, too-small hat, so check frequently.
Shaping To achieve the domed shape of the cloche, dry over a bowl in the appropriate size.
