Put the nut milk, kefir, or yogurt (plus 1⁄2 cup/4 fl oz/125 ml water if using yogurt) into the blender container. Add the oats, banana, maple syrup, dates or pear, and chia seeds or flax meal (if using). Put the ice on top. Put the lid on securely, turn the dial to the smoothie setting (or set the variable speed dial to 1), and start the machine. If using the smoothie setting, process until the machine turns itself off. If using the dial, increase the speed to the highest setting and run for 45 seconds or until completely smooth.
Pour the smoothie into 1 or 2 glasses and serve right away.
