Description

Old Christmas cards are cut and either crocheted or cross-stitched together to create lightweight flat or 3-dimensional ornaments.

Instructions

  1. Create a template for each shape you plan to use. (second photo) The circle, oval, and diamond shapes are used for flat ornaments. The square, "orange-peel", and triangle shapes are used for the 3-dimensional ornaments.

  2. Cut motifs from Christmas cards. You will need 2 for each of the flat ornaments, 4 for the pyramids, 6 for the cubes, and for the 3-sided ornaments.

  3. Place the pieces back-to-back on a ceiling tile or bulletin board, and punch holes around the edges, using pushpins to keep the spacing even. (third photo) Punching 2 or more pieces at a time helps keep the hole spacing consistent for each ornament.

  4. Crochet the pieces for the flat ornaments together using crochet cotton and a steel crochet hook small enough to fit through the holes. Leave enough crochet thread at the top of the ornament to make a hanging loop. For the 3-dimensional ornaments, it is easier to attach the pieces together using cross-stitch and an embroidery needle. Attach a separate hanging loop at the top of the ornament.
