Finished Block: 14˝ × 12 ˝
Finished Quilt: 841/2˝ × 511/4˝

Here’s a quilt inspired by those little boxes of candy hearts that make their appearance around Valentine’s Day. Candy Hearts is a sweet
celebration of the hues and shapes of the holiday, but it will look delicious in your home all year round. Give it a scrappy look using charm packs or a transitional look with 1/4-yard cuts.

Steps (8 steps, 1800 minutes)

  1. 1

    Creation
Sew with right sides together and 1/4 ̋ seam allowances.

Pair a white 21/2 ̋ × 21/2 ̋ square with a colored 21/2 ̋ × 21/2 ̋ square and sew together on the diagonal to make a half-square triangle. Trim the seam 1/4 ̋ from the sewn line (on either side) and press open. Make 18.

  2. 2

Take 2 of the white/color squares made in Step 1 and place another color square on top of each. Sew together along the opposite diagonal. Press open. Trim the seam 1/4 ̋ from the sewn line (on either side) and press open. Make 2.

  3. 3

Lay out the pieces as shown, adding white and color squares. Sew together each row; then sew all the rows to form a heart shape.

    Sew together all heart rows.

  4. 4

Sew a colored 21/2 ̋ × 21/2 ̋ square to a white 21/2 ̋ × 101/2 ̋ rectangle. Press the seam to 1 side. Sew the unit to the left side of the heart block. Complete block

  5. 5

Repeat Steps 1–4 to complete 6 hearts.

  6. 6

Place the heart blocks in the desired order and sew them together, forming a strip of hearts. Sew together heart blocks.

  7. 7

Square up the remaining white fabric and cut the piece so that it matches the length of the heart block strip, which will be about 841/2 ̋. Cut off the selvages and then trim to 39 ̋ wide, or leave it wider if you prefer to make a slightly bigger quilt. Sew the white fabric piece to the top of the strip of hearts.

  8. 8

Quilt and bind to finish Candy Hearts. Consider adding an optional trim along the quilt’s edge before binding
