Instructions

  1. Front Legs Using 3.25 mm (US #4) needles and yarn A, cast on 40 (46, 52) sts. Row 1 (RS): * K1, P1, rep from * to end. Repeat this row 9 times more. Commencing with a knit row, work in st st for 5 inches (12.5 cm) ending with a WS row. Put these stitches on a spare needle. Work second leg in same way. With RS facing knit across this leg, then across the first leg (80, 92, 102 sts). Commencing with a purl row work in st st for 6.5 inches (16 cm) ending with a WS row. Leave sts on a spare needle.

  2. Skirt Using 3.25 mm (US #4) needles and yarn A, cast on 80 (92, 102) sts. Work in rib as set for leg for 6 rows. Commencing with a knit row, work in st st for 10.5 inches (26 cm), ending with a WS row. Place the needle with leg stitches behind the skirt stitches also with RS facing. Work one row, knitting together one st from each needle to end of row. Next row (WS): Purl. Next row: K2tog, K to last 2 sts, K2tog. Next row: Purl. Repeat the last 2 rows until 62 (74, 84) sts remain. Continue without shaping for a further 12 (12, 16) rows. Next row (RS): K1, M1, K last st, M1, K1. Next row: Purl. Repeat these 2 rows until 72 (84, 94) sts. Commencing with row 1 work 45 rows from chart using intarsia technique. Commencing with a purl row and working on yarn A, work 7 rows in st st. Armhole shaping Next row (RS): Cast off 6 sts at beginning of row, knit to end. Next row: Cast off 6 sts at beginning of row, purl to end. Continue decreasing by K2tog at each end of every RS row until 52 (64, 74) sts. Neck shaping Next Row: P16 (22, 25) cast off 20 (20, 24), P16 (22, 25).

  3. Straps Working on one shoulder strap at a time, K2tog at each end of every RS row until 8 (12, 15) sts remain. K2tog at each end of every 4th row until 6 (6, 7) sts remain. Continue without shaping for a further 3 inches (7.5 cm) or until strap is desired length. Leave on a spare needle. With RS facing rejoin yarn to remaining 16 (22, 25) sts and work as given for first shoulder.

  4. Back Work as given for front but omitting seagull design. Use three needle bind off technique to join front and back shoulder straps.

  5. Gusset Using 3.25 mm (US #4) needles and yarn A, cast on 2 sts, and commencing with a K row, work in st st, inc 1 st at each end of every knit row until there are 42 sts on needle. K2tog at each end of every RS row until 2 sts remain. Cast off.

  6. Making up Press all pieces on wrong side, putting a damp cloth over the knitting. Sew up the side seams of the legs, then the skirt and bodice. Sew along the ribbed parts of the inside leg seam, then sew the gusset into the opening. Darn in all ends. Knitting by Dorothy Crawford
