A retro calculator makes the ideal cover for a tablet or netbook. This classic style is knitted using the fair-isle and intarsia techniques in a soft cotton. The grid design is easy to knit and the numbers can be worked using the fair-isle technique or by Swiss darning. It is fastened securely with press studs and can be lined with fabric for extra padding. Gauge: 20 sts and 26 rows to 4” (10cm) in St st using larger needles. Finished measurement: About 12” (30cm) long x 9” (23.5cm) wide. Pattern note: The cover is worked in one piece starting at the base of the flap. It is knitted in St st using the fair-isle method for the pattern stitches.

Instructions

  1. Cover Front flap: Using smaller needles and shade A, cast on 44 sts. Knit 4 rows. Change to larger needles and cont as folls: Next Row (Rs): Knit. Next Row: K2, purl to last 2 sts, k2. Cont to work in St st with 2 knit sts at each end of every WS row, and est chart as foll: Next Row (Rs): K2, changing colors as indicated and working Front Flap chart from right to left on RS rows and from left to right on WS rows, work the 40 st pattern, k2. Cont as est until row 17 of the Front Flap chart has been worke

  2. Top turning row: (ws): Using shade A, knit to end.

  3. Back: Next Row (Rs): Using shade A, knit to end. Next Row: Purl. Beg and end with a RS row, cont in St st throughout, using shade A for 73 rows. Base tuRNiNg Row (ws): Using shade A, knit to end of row.

  4. Front: Next Row (Rs): K10, [m1, k8] 3 times, m1, k10. 48 sts. Next Row: Purl. Next Row: Using shade B, work the 53 rows of Calculator Tablet Cover chart, changing shades as indicated. Beg with a WS row, cont in St st using shade B for 14 rows, ending with a RS row. Knit 4 rows. Bind off.

  5. Making up: * Fold the cover in half at the base turning row. Sew up the two side seams. * Sew the snaps onto the inside of the flap spaced evenly along the garter st edging. Sew the other half of the snaps to the corresponding position on the front of the cover.
