Buttons are such a great option for customizing as they offer a very cute and easy way to make an item look individual and stylish. You can choose colourful and bright, or maybe striking in black and white – the choice is yours!

Instructions

  1. Small screen shot 2013 11 20 at 16.12.04

Cut a piece of cord about 60 cm long. Attach a bulldog clip about 10 cm from one end so your buttons won’t fall off. tip Cut the end of the cord carefully and pinch the end together so it doesn’t fray too much. This will make it easier to thread through the button holes.

  2. Small screen shot 2013 11 20 at 16.12.28

Start threading your assorted buttons on to the elastic cord, one at a time. For the first button, thread the cord up through a hole, over and down the opposite hole.

For the second button, thread under and over. Repeat this pattern of over and under/under and over for the next button. This way, the buttons will stack, giving a cool chunky feel.

Keep stacking until you’re happy with the length of buttons. Take off the bulldog clip.

Now you’re ready to attach the watch face onto your string of buttons. Thread the cord through the clasp on one side of the watch face.

Pull the watch along the cord until it meets the end button. Thread the cord back through the clasp to make it more secure. tip Never throw away a button! Even if an old top is past its best, the cute buttons on it could make the perfect watch strap!

Now thread the cord up and over the end button and pull the cord tight so the button is close to the watch face.

Turn the strap over and tie a very tight double knot in the cord so it doesn’t slip through the button hole. Now repeat Steps 6–8 on the other side.

Dab a very small amount of clear nail varnish on both knots so they don’t come untied when you wear your watch. Cut any excess cord. Your lovely button watch strap is now complete!
