Gauge just refers to the size or thickness of the wire. The lower the number the thicker the wire. For instance 18g wire is thicker than 20g. The particular wire I used is an anti-tarnish silver coated copper wire made by Artistic Wire Ltd. I bought it from an online craft supplier sometime ago.(I don't remember which one.) But, really you could use whatever kind/gauge of wire you wanted. As long as it fits through the button holes, and is strong enough to hold up the buttons once twisted.
