Want to add a little something extra to a room? Why not put a board and batten treatment on the walls!? With some paint and wood, you can totally transform your room in a few days!
To begin, measure out your room to see how many boards you will need. Determine the spacing between each batten and the height you would like your board and batten all together. -Tape off as you go so you know exactly how it will look when finished. *For this tutorial, I am going to tell you all the dimensions we used for our room but you can choose to have your battens closer together and not as high as ours as well.
Next, head to your local home improvement store (we went to Home Depot) to get your boards. It is cheaper to buy a full, large sheet of MDF (we bought 2 sheets of 1/2 in. MDF for our project) and have an employee cut it down to the dimensions you need, then to buy individual boards. Dimensions of our materials: Batten- 3 inches wide Baseboards and top board- 4 inches wide Picture Ledge- 2 1/2 inch wide (these were not cut for us, we bought pre cut pieces.) Battens are spaced 24 inches apart and the whole treatment is 70 inches high.
Once you get all your boards home, give them a coat of primer before installing them on the wall.
And while someone primes the boards, have someone paint your room. We choose to keep the wall where the treatment was white, and then painted yellow above the treatment. No need for a straight line. The boards will cover it up!
Tear out any existing baseboards and install the new 4 inch baseboards using liquid nails and then nails.
Then apply the battens, again using the liquid nails and then nails. We placed tape on the boards to keep them flush to the wall while nailing them in with a nail gun. For the corner boards, we cut one of the 3 inch boards in half and applied each half on the each wall of the corner. Also, trim the boards to fit around any electrical outlets as you go.
Once all your battens are applied, install the top 4 inch board to cap it off.
We added a 2 1/2 in. picture ledge on top of the top board and then applied a small piece of molding under the ledge for a little extra support and detail.
Once all is installed, fill in any holes, sand, and wipe clean. Also, caulk anywhere the board meets the wall and around the molding.
After all is sanded and caulk is dry, time to paint your main coat. We painted the batten the same as the wall color but you can always use a different color for contrast.
Once paint is dry, admire all your hard work and decorate!
