This sweet birdie on her nest is just the thing for Mom, or a mom-to-be…make it with the lamp work bird as shown or downsize it and use a tiny cast birdie with 24 gauge wire for a delicate necklace or as a pair of earrings. We’ve mixed up the metals in the design so that Mom can wear it with all her favorite clothes.

The gunmetal wire we used has a soft copper core and is so easy to work with your fingers or tools that you’ll find nest building very rewarding.

You Will Need (9 things)

  • 36 in of gunmetal Wire , 20 gauge
  • 1 yellow lamp work birdie Bead(s)
  • 16 in of antique silver extender Chain
  • 1 antique brass spring ring Clasp(s) , 12 mm
  • 1 antique copper Head Pin(s) , 3 inch
  • 2 antique brass square Jump Ring(s) , ½ inch
  • Wire Cutters
  • Chain Nose Pliers
  • Flat Nose Pliers

Steps (5 steps, 40 minutes)

    Using your round nose pliers form a loop in the center of the wire as shown.

    Select one of the wire ends and using your flat nose pliers or your hands wrap the wire end around the loop to form a loose spiral. Don’t try to make the spiral too uniform. Remember; this nest is supposed to look like it was woven by a bird. When you reach the end of that side of the wire tuck the tip into the nest using your chain nose pliers.

    Select the remaining wire end and begin lacing the wire in and through the loose nest shape. This is almost like stitching but don’t pull the wire too tight or your nest will not look natural. When you reach the end of the wire tuck the tip into the nest using your chain nose pliers.

    Thread the head pin through the original loop in the center of the nest and then throught the bird. Using your round nose pliers create a wrapped loop on top of the bird and trim the excess wire with your wire cutters. Using your chain nose pliers open the square jump ring and thread it through the loop. Close securely. Set bird charm aside.

    Using your chain nose pliers open the ring on the split ring clasp and thread it through one end of the chain. Close securely. Thread the chain through the square jump ring on the bird charm. Using your chain nose pliers open the remaining square jump ring and thread it through the remaining end of the chain and close securely.
