I knit a lot of mittens for homeless kids and adults. These mittens fit average-size adult hand.

Instructions

1. 

   Using US 6 dpn cast on 36 sts using color A join in the round. Begin rib pattern: *k1,p1 : rep from * to the end. Do rib pattern until cuff measure 2 1/2" or desired lenth. Next rnd: inc 1 stitch, you will have 37 sts now.

2. 

   Change color b and 7Us dpn next rnd: (k6, m1) to the last 7 sts, K7- you will have 42 sts next rnd: knit 3 rnds

3. 

   Right Hand next rnd: k21, pm, m1, k3, m1, pm, knit to end next rnd: knit 3 rnds next rnd:k to the marker, sm, m1,k5, m1, sm, knit to end next rnd: knit next rnd: k to marker, sm, m1, k7, m1, sm, k to end next rnd: knit next rnd: k to marker, sm, m1, k9, m1,sm, k to end next rnd: knit next rnd: k to marker, sm, m1, k11, m1, sm k to end next rnd: knit next rnd: knit to marker remove marker, CO 3 sts using backward loop cast on, put 13 sts on holder for thumb knit to end

   Knit until the body of the mitten measures 7 inches from top of cuff -Note: for accurate fit begin tip shaping above tip of pinky. Shape Mitten next rnd: k4, k3tog, (k7, k3tog) to last 5 sts, k5 next rnd: knit 3 rnds next rnd: k3, k3tog, (k5,k3tog) to last 4 sts, k4 next rnd: k 3 rnds next rnd: k2, k3tog, (k3,k3tog) to last 3 sts, k3. (18sts) next rnd: k cut yarn leaving 6inch tail pull through 18 sts and secure

5. Work the thumb Join yarn and use dpn to knit across the thumb sts and the holder. Knit 10 rnds. Work dec rnd: K1 (k2tog) to end- 7 sts and pull together. Sew the thumb.

6. Left Mitten Work as given for right hand mitten until thumb next rnd: k18, pm, m1, k3, m1, pm, knit to end next rnd: knit 3 rnds next rnd:k to the marker, sm,m1,k5, m1, sm, knit to end next rnd: knit next rnd: k to marker, sm, m1, k7, m1, sm, k to end next rnd: knit next rnd: k to marker, sm, m1, k9, m1,sm, k to end next rnd: knit next rnd: k to marker, sm, m1, k11, m1, sm k to end next rnd: knit next rnd: knit to marker remove marker, CO 3 sts using backward loop cast on, put 13 sts on holder for thumb knit to end
