About

In Japan making food into decorative shapes for children’s bento's (lunches) has become an art form and is loved by many children (and me). These rabbit apples are a classic example. They're quick and easy to make.

This is my first how-to so i hope it helps. I'm sorry it has no pictures but its difficult to take the picture and cut an apple at the same time.

I do not recommend this for anyone with particularly poor knife skills. If your quite young, you might want adult help with this (hehe i'm like blue peter XD).
Have fun!

You Will Need (2 things)

  • A Small, Sharp Knife
  • Apple

Steps (5 steps, 5 minutes)

  1. 1

avoiding the core, simply cut your apple into segments. you want your segments to be as rectangular on the bottom as possible (but obviously the top will be curved).

  2. 2

using a sharp knife, cut a shallow V-shape into the skin (about an eighth of an inch deep). the V shape will become the head and ears of your rabbit. To expose the rabbits body start the tips of the ears about two-thirds of the way up the apple.

  3. 3

run the knife just under the apple peel (a shallow cut), but be sure to stop at the base of the “V” (ths V's innermost point. Take off the excess peel(and snack on it :P)so the remaining peel should look vaguely like rabbit ears.

  4. 4

If the peel doesn’t come off, run your knife along the “V” again until the peel comes loose.

  5. 5

though ive not tested it yet, ive heard that in order to make the ears curl up, give them a short soak in ice water after cutting the peel (3-4 minutes, depending upon how thick you cut it).
